On Friday morning, Ubisoft announced the next game in the Ghost Recon franchise, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, during a livestream event which showed the first gameplay footage and an announcement trailer.
Ghost Recon Breakpoint continues Ghost Recon Wildland’s open-world style, but this time the player is placed behind enemy lines on an island called Auroa. Auroa is run drone creator and tech giant, Skell Technology, however, it has been taken over by a group of ex-Ghosts called The Wolves, lead by, Lt. Colonel Cole D. Walker, played by actor Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Punisher). Walker has turned the drones on the island into killing machines, and is hunting the player down after their helicopter crash lands on Auroa.
Emil Daubon, Ghost Recon writer and ex-U.S. Army Green Beret stressed that the main theme of Ghost Recon Breakpoint is about forcing the player to use their skills to survive against the odds. As a result, the team is giving players more stealth options.
The gameplay reveal shows new mechanics such as ‘prone camo’, which allows the player to camouflage themselves in materials like mud to remain undetected, and it also showed the ability to pick up enemies to hide them from being discovered. When playing co-op, downed teammates can also be picked up and moved to safer reviving locations.
Survival elements such as managing stamina and recovering from injuries will also play a big role in the game, although the team is staying quiet about how they work thus far. The livestream reveal indicated injuries to certain body parts will affect gameplay elements until healed, such as being able to aim a gun or sprint.
In an interview with Press Start, Sebastien Le Prestre, Lead Development Tester, said players “will never be in a situation where you will not be able to deal with one of the drawbacks of survival…”, highlighting the game as a military shooter rather than a survival game.

The game will be playable in solo or through four player co-op. However, in solo play there won’t be any AI filling in for squad members. Rather, for the series’ trademark sync shot, the player will deploy drones.
Ubisoft says the community influenced some aspects of Breakpoint, such as the inclusion of a new story with hundreds of cutscenes, and dialogue choices. Players will also have full control over player customisation.
Ghost Recon Breakpoint will feature player-versus-player game modes at launch, with progression shared between both game modes.
Ubisoft also announced post-launch content, including a new expansion every four months, including the first ever raid in Ghost Recon, new story arcs, new classes and other features.
Ghost Recon Breakpoint will be available on October 4 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Several special editions are available, which include access to a Season Pass, various in-game items, beta access and up to three days early access to the full game.
I was a big fan of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and dabbled in Wildlands. Ghost Recon Breakpoint has a chance to be a cool turning point for the franchise with its new stealth mechanics and survival elements. I hope Breakpoint is a more story-driven experience compared to Wildlands, and finds a way to make its open world structure, less repetitive.
